I like it better, makes reading much more enjoyable. I find that I'm much more able to embody characters' (and narrator's) tones, especially when it comes to humour

Also, not subvocalizing can get hairy if phrasing gets too complex but that's probably just me because I don't really practice speed reading. You know, on the account of making reading so much less enjoyable

I only subvocalise poetry.

I also subvocalise when I'm writing, but that's only because the process of writing is so much slower than reading.

There is a difference between "need" and "prefer to". I can probably go at about 150 pages an hour just skimming through a book, but pausing, subvocalizing, all these are a part of really appreciating a work.
