What is the scariest plot you can think of, /lit/? What horror genre does it fall under (psychological thriller, monster horror, nonfiction, infection, etc.)? It's the time of the season, so let's all monster mash our faces against our keyboards and help those of us who are seasonal writers with our writer's block!

Problem what is scary to one person, isn't scary to others. So it becomes a question on trying to find the lowest common denominator.

Eternal suffering like in 'I have no mouth, and I must scream' is infinitely more scary than some monster/ghost that causes death.

Also being trapped somewhere forever, this just be me and my claustrophobia but I get the cold swears just thinking about trapped in a box/oubliette/small room.

So the scariest plot, for me, would probably be some guy who's forced to spend eternity in a box?

You could write some psychosis-core, a la The Turner Diaries. Many people find right wing extremism rather unsettling.

This. There's that Stephen King story about the guy getting autopsied while he's paralyzed, too.

Also I've read an watched a lot of horror and I think creepypasta especially late at night and in the traditional black background format, is spookier than most traditional stories.

The narrator divulges how they have been harassed late at night by an incessant ticking or tapping, when they try and seek the location of the tapping it swiftly moves to another area of the person's bedroom. The narrator soon learns he is plagued by a boogeyman type entity. The short story ends with the narrator revealing they've not slept since first hearing the taps.

Terrifying? Bleak and depressing sure, but it doesn't really contain that element of can't-sleep-monsters-will-eat-me that comes with terrifying. There's a difference between an unpleasant scenario and something which generates actual FEAR.

being trapped in some obscure part of your own consciousness scares me the most

because there's no obvious way to navigate back to reality we don't really know how to move through our minds and if its only somewhere inside our heads with no external stimulus being felt there's no assurance time is being perceived accurately

imagine being trapped eternally in some sort of consciousness blue-screen only it's not blue it's free of visual input and the only thing reminding you you're alive is that you can think and maybe the occasional sense of bodily movement or dizziness

There is that book from the guy who wakes up and is in outer space, suddenly he is going realy fast and lose reference from where earth is and than you realize how fucking scare something like that would be. This is only less than half of the book, thought, and I truly enjoyed more this horrific thought of being lost in outer space than the rest of the book.

I think it is called Cosmos or Starmaker, but I'm not sure.

I finished writing a novella about this very thing recently. It was about a man who builds a suit to make him immortal, but he ends up going insane and rotting away inside it instead.

I could post it somewhere come Halloween if anyone likes.

Anon who came up with the tapping boogeyman story here, how about something that would shock people who are addicted to too much technology like mobile phones? Maybe a story about phone like things who turn people into catatonic vegetables because it gives them an infinite sense of pleasure due to the more they use them? Make the main character extremely phobic and suspicious towards them or something.
