This is not something for any time soon, but something I am considering after finishing our Dostoevsky reading club. A Conservative Reading Club. So if you have any books you'd like to see in it, post

I already had in mind "A Vindication of Natural Society", by Burke, "Meaning of Conservatism", by Scruton, and "Sex and Culture", by Unwin. There are many more I could list, but I don't feel like typing up an exhaustive list right this minute. So if you could add to it, please do. And if you feel like it, post reasons with your title.

probably not pure conservatism, but Anarchy State and Utopia by Nozick is a great book, along with The Law by Bastiat.

"Democracy in America" - Alexis de Tocqueville

"The Conservative Mind: From Burke to Santayana" - Russell Kirk (it's more of an encyclopedia and it is incredibly dense but you should take a look at it)

Anarchy, State, and Utopia is great for minarchism/minimal statism, not necessarily conservatism, but it's placement on a libertarian reading list would be essential.

Some who values traditions and sentiments above reason. because they see them as collective, intricate wisdom that shouldn't be rapidly overturned due to unforeseen repercussions. Conservatism isn't opposed to change, but only approves of change built firmly on the past as opposed to totally disconnected with it. Conservatism is about supporting a sphere of tradition--since both the market and the (contemporary) state are not governed by tradition, these sphere has to be outside of both, and the duty of both is to serve and protect it.

Pretty much anything that's reasonably conservative. Only guideline is don't be to burger with it. If you must be burger, at least make it paleoconservative.

Er, no. Dostoevsky IS conservative, though, in a sense. "Demons" certainly is a conservative work in a way. But his conservatism isn't political. In fact, Dostoevsky wasn't very political in any sense, even his socialist attitudes were more about an ethos than politics. In the Brothers Karamazov, he makes it clear that he considers politics rather beneath religion.

That reminds me of Tocqueville saying that, in America, religion resides outside politics and that gives it great power over the people. In a democracy, things are always changing, so religion remains as a constant rock and can thus have a greater affect on the mores and therefore a greater effect on the country and its government.

That said, I'd consider Dostoevsky essential reading for any conservative, I just wouldn't classify him as "conservative literature", because he's more exploring the philosophical ethos of conservatism than writing essays on political systems. He expresses the problems with liberalism and atheistic socialism, but more from a philosophical view than critiquing the functioning of the systems.

I enjoyed Peter Hitchens' books. The Rage Against God, for example, made me understand a lot better the relationship between religion, state and culture.

Has anyone else read any of Anthony Daniels (Theodore Dalrymple)? He writes less about conservatism and more about everything else from a conservative perspective though.
