Most common interpretation is that everything (or at least everything after the explosion on...Mars?) was inside the one guy's head and now they're trying to contact him in cryo-sleep with the coins just like they were trying to contact the other guy in the within-his-head narrative.

It doesn't really make that much sense though, I think it's more likely that PKD slapped a fuck you crazy twist ending on without caring how good it was.

It's been a while since I've read it but, I'm pretty sure Runciter finding the coins in his pocket was more meant to leave doubt in the reader's mind about what's real and what's not, not so much a twist (though it does feel a bit tacked on). I think all the events with the kid that's absorbing all the others definitively shows that Joe and the others ARE dead.
