I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that what most hipsters are trying to do is live something akin to the 'poet' lifestyle. Thought they look the part, live in similar neighborhoods, and may very well ride out road-bikes, eat vegan, and drink Yingling, they don't have the same artistic authenticity or poetic humility of life.

Most times, 'hipsters' are people that choose that lifestyle bc of a certain aesthetic appeal, because if you look/eat/live a certain way, you'll think yourself some sort of 'truer' human, but, in fact, I claim that this is merely ideology at its finest; I am eating *SNNNFFF* at the trash can the whole time.

No, hipsters are all about appearances. They're culture vultures. They find obscure things to like that they use to express themselves. You'd never find a hipster with the discipline to write a novel with the scope and breadth of Infinite Jest.

Not really. I wouldn't call myself a fan of Infinite Jest. I just don't think a hipster could possibly write anything like it. Hipsters write things like Tao Lin and Mira Gonzalez.

even if you aren't a fan of infinite jest, it really isn't shit-tier quality, every urban outfitters teen loves to read the 10 page list about why people have tattoos, probably gloss over the dog-murder scenes and don't really piece together the the post-Whataburger events, its not Mira Gonzalez spitting out bloggy poems without any use of meter or rhythm (the only interesting things poetry had going for it, died with neruda tbh)

So no, DFW wasn't a hipster at all. The reason he is sometimes labeled as a metamodernist(or post-post modernist, even though that term fucking sucks) is because he attempted to reconcile the "midwestern persona" so to speak with intellectualism.

That might be a really meretricious way of wording that, but I guess that's what I genuinely thought of Infinite Jest, and of DFW as well. This is purely conjecture, but I think part of his depression was he realized the midwestern American had such an enviable sincerity tainted by a lack of intelligence, whereas "intellectuals" have an enviable breadth of knowledge but are pretentious dickheads.
