not really.

dont want to make another long post about it, but basically they took a few real days that were entirely undramatic and embellished them and dialed up the drama and restructured the events so that they formed a kind of story.

not faithful, although i dont think segel's dfw was bad - not complex enough, but not unfaithful.

basically: the book is an interview, the movie is a movie.

Plus they tried to Lionize DFW, in context I am someone who loves DFW, but I know that he was an asshole, he was human, he wasn't this sort of fallen hero that we could've saved, and now we need to listen to his words, especially This is Water which should be the beginning of the DFW bible.

I've talked to faculty members who said he was an asshole, but so what, he was a fucking human being, he wasn't some sort of Messiah for the intellectuals and he would be embarrassed if anyone thought him like that. I'm not trying to know what he would've thought, you can't, he's dead.

The absolute worst thing is Lipsky crying listening to Wallace, that was odious.

I went in with the lowest of expectations and came out pleasantly surprised. If "faithful" is what you're looking for though, no... it isn't. It's entertaining though, but I imagine a lot of people who like DFW will wince at this because it violates the very same honesty that he's supposed to be about, by making him into some too-beautiful-for-this-world unicorn martyr

I found it entertaining though, and to my anecdotal experience so did most people who went in with dirt expectations. Just don't take it very seriously

What I interpret it as is not a list of edicts that we should start abiding by, but an observation of what he saw in today's culture.

He talked constantly about the self and the idea of satisfying our own desires, how that created a culture of entitlement, I need to satisfy my desires, me me me.

What I apprehend of what he meant by This is Water is not being a good person, that is simple and it's implying that it is all binary. What I think it meant was to open ourselves to the idea that other people live in this world and that they have their own problems, that the world doesn't revolve around our problems, our wants, our outlook. I think the only simplistic way I can put this is that he was calling for people to be more empathetic and to wander outside their respective bubbles and ingratiate themselves with reality.

I don't know if this made any sense.
