I need to pick literature to read for the final exam of my french course but I'm at a loss.

I already am reading The Stranger by Camus and La Haine by Kassovitz.

I'm looking for something older than 1900 that isn't too hard to get in to (preferably fewer characters, not too many references, etc.)

Can anyone help?

Usually I like interesting/strange/outcast characters that are sort of isolated, like Notes from Underground or The Temple of the Golden Pavilion.
Don Quijote is probably my favourite book of all time, though in general I am not a heavy reader tbh.

Montaigne in the middle french is more effort than its worth. I say that as someone who reads Villon and many of the Provençal troubadours in the original. Just read a modern version of him.

OP I would recommend Robbe-Grillet's Dans le Labyrinthe if you want an interesting read that's not too much harder than the stranger. A real challenge would be Flaubert, whose style will fuck you in the ass until you're flawlessly fluent with reading, but if you don't have the time or patience, don't.

You have to read Les Chants de Maldoror.

Lautréamont writes in a very modern French, and his prose really compliments the tone of what is being said.

Flaubert's style isn't particularly hard. In fact, it's quite simple (or at least easier than, for example, Balzac's one)
