>>7290217>and their false view of human nature arose out of their false metaphysics. This is how: they both inherited the metaphysics of Descartes in some form or other. The empiricist strand (Locke and Hobbes) stresses sensation, the rationalist strand (Rousseau) stresses reason; but the main thing is that they BOTH make the human mind the judge of its own reality, they both leave the human mind stranded on a metaphysical island without any contact to an outside reality. The empiricist are stuck in the senses and the rationalist are stuck in the intellect.
Compare this to the doctrine of Aristotle: we access individual substances through our senses, and then through the power of abstraction native to the intellect we are able to discern the nature of these substances. In other words, our minds have access to REALITY, to being, to the outside. This is why Aristotle is able to see man as a social being --- because man's mind has access to the community of being, reality --- and those three see man as an individual --- because man's mind is trapped inside itself.
