Where to start?

I've been wanting to get into reading and I don't know where to start.
I'v been browsing /lit/ for the past week or so and I've heard discussions about all sorts of books and that only makes it more difficult to decide.
Where should a person that wants to get into reading start?

Reading isn't some linear process. Just pick any well-regarded book you have easy access to, maybe not one that is very long or notoriously difficult.

Seriously and sincerely, Start with the Greeks. It may be a meme, but it is honestly a great way to get into reading. You'll not only see the start of the Western Canon, but you'll be able to try out many various forms of literature to find what you like -- there's something for everyone in the Greeks. I've got to go now, but the Greeks are very enjoyable to read and you'll have a basic understanding of the foundations of literature. They're very easy to branch off from as well; If you enjoy the Iliad then you could read Storm of Steel by Junger, or The Saga of the Volsungs; if you enjoy Thucydides' History of the Pellopenessian War, then you could read more about the history of the classical times, or begin learning about political theory by reading Cicero or Machiavelli. I'd write more but I've got dinner downstairs; just Start with the Greeks m8 (Ofcourse you can read other books alongside them, like those in the /lit/ starter pack)

Well, tell us a little bit more of what you're looking for. This can be hard to say when you don't really have a way to frame the possibilities. A few example questions that might help us:

>Do you want fiction?
>Are there any particular concepts/themes would you like to see developed?
>Are you mainly interested in plot?
>Something modern or is old okay?
>Do you enjoy reading, or does it have to really hook you? (as in, the physical act of sitting and reading)

Start with popular fiction. Are there genres in movies you like? Read the book equivalent. Then after you get comfortable go up to literary fiction. Whatever authors you grew to like, find the literary inspirations behind them.

Fiction is prefered but I'd also like to get used to non-fiction literature.

Not really, just throw me anything.

While I think a good plot is important, I'm also interested in fleshed out characters and a "good" writing style.

I really don't know. As long as I don't need a dictionary to look up every word in that's written in Old English I should be fine.

I really enjoy reading. When I was younger I used to read a lot of Enid Blyton.
Starting is always the hardest part but after the first few pages I really start enjoying it and I won't put the book down until I've finished it.
