>>7290865Kubrick makes cold, autistic films. He has god tier cinematography when he wants to.
I'm too invested at this point to name one favorite director, but Tarkovsky and Malick are probably top tier, and just slightly below that would be Murnau, Cassavetes, Angelopoulos, and Bergman. I feel like I can't actually say a single director is my favorite without betraying all my other favorite director's genius. Oddly I like Bergman less and less, but I still consider him to have two master pieces, and I think I will always treasure him to some extent.
About to watch another film tonight. Last night it was Marcel Carne's Children of Paradise. Someone recommend me a master piece.
>since some people are gonna say Lynch I want to know what makes him great beyond the randomness of his filmsNot my favorite, but he's pretty good and gets shit on entirely too much. I think what DFW says about him is pretty spot on. After that he's a master of atmosphere, great pop surrealist. He's not just some le random surrealist, most of what he does makes sense, although his fanboys can probe a bit too deep into his pictures. And finally, he's a fucking comedian. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to, but I laugh constantly during most of his surreal films.
