I've read Spengler's Decline of the West, and while I don't agree with how many people have taken what he argued, I do think that he was correct in his basic assertion that each civilization goes through a 'life cycle'. However, Spengler's model for civilizations doesn't work for every civilization, since we have a lot more information about ancient cultures than he did.

His basic assertion is solid, but later attempts to explain why have strayed hard into /pol/-tier thinking. Especially when it came to the involvement of whites and white cultures in history, and the role degeneracy has played in creating 'post-modern' culture.

It sounds like you have something useful to say about Spengler, but here you haven't gone beyond a facile argument. For example, how do you define culture, or civilization, what difference would you draw between them?

What information do you refer to?

What point do you intend to make concerning 'whites' and the subject of 'degeneracy'?

It seems like everything stated above relies upon your referral to 'things we all know now' or 'things we all should know now' from watching television, or reading the newspaper.

They seemed to be obsessed with the title of his book and trying to avoid the ominous front page than actually reading the book thoroughly.
Because reading Decline of the West, you will not become a reactionary. Quite the contrary even. His piece on socialism is some stuff you'd see Zizek write.

You might become an apolitical Stoic more so than a member of some populist movement trying to save the West.

I read Decline of the West in German and it made me want to get into history more. I admired his try to find an underlying principle to human civilization(s). Of course he was bound to fail but his writings had some interesting influence on a lot of other writers, including my favorite, Gottfried Benn.
