How come a significant portion of the Western intellectual elite supports an extreme left ideology?

I don't even ask this as someone who is a right winge ( because I'm not ), but it is quite peculiar how intellectuals endorse a fringe ideology with very little followers among the larger population.

Liberal ideas mostly rely on emotions and a certain mastery of a rather restricted vocabulary, of some readily available concepts to be used in almost any situation.

It allows for an opinion and some easily understood discourse on almost anything, and a reading of any event or past work within a very simple framework, where everyone gets to understand and agree. Its methods and rhetorics could be compared to that of protestantism.

Since it only becomes relevant in a very particular social context, and is imposed upon its members within entrance in that social class, to be able to instantly perform outgroup bias upon what is considered as less educated members of society (the social class endorsing such a left wants to be able to claim social standing independently of their salary, thus based on cultural capital), this very class is deeply separated from the rest of society, and unable to understand any issue or event in a way relevant to the current state of the world.

In the end, the point of such a left, within its own class, is to claim a belonging to a higher social standing, and thus to justify themselves with cultural capital.

You're considering their rhetorics, not what they are. Their beliefs are secondary and the social class they represent is as old as the Western world. They're the ones misquoting Homer with Trimalchio, they're the monks and theologians Rabelais laughs at, --- they would accept any ideology, as long as it grants them access to the cultural elites of society.
