Wow, it astonishes me that anyone is able to be such a coward. So afraid of confrontation that they won't even present the socially acceptable views in class for fear of being in an argument. However, two adults can have a conversation about something uncomfortable.

That book is just about the general and existential black struggle in American life.

Your point in class was about ideology which has the capacity for violence and a supposedly great mans actions in that violence.

I'm just assuming but I think its clear this person is one of those "this is a reasonable response to the situation" types, and insofar that she is one its truly impossible to argue with.

The issue with this idea is that if you claim a group is sufficiently oppressed then any act by them is already explained retroactively by their oppression.

they: loot/rob/rape/bomb/home invade/sell drugs/ shoots own family/ any bad action under the sun; oh well that is understandable under the pressure of oppression etc.

I'm not saying that oppression does not effect people or should not be taken into account, but the leader of a movement and was university educated. The extent to which he believed in or used violence is an interesting question and it certainly does paint a more nuanced picture of him as a leader.
It is certainly not his only defining characteristic, and I don't think violence is always bad, but indiscriminate bombings and things are obviously more problematic than other types of violence.
I find it interesting that your female peer made the logical connection to the black struggle in America. I think she was trying to paint a picture for you of the historical reality black people face. But its interesting that she finds that historical reality to be an explain all cause for black behavior. Its not. Every black person is interfacing with their history and the ways in which they differ with that interfacing are varied and important.
