I love me some anime, but I'm not going to walk out there and say that it's better than even a fraction of Western literature on a literary scale.

The only anime I've seen that comes close to literature, rather than just a decent genre thriller, would be Legend of the Galactic Heroes. And that's because it's pretty much just Napoleonics in Space and long enough to actually explore its story.

Don't try too hard. If you don't understand a book you are reading try to search the internet for some reviews or annotations. You will eventually have enough references to be able to read and analise a book all on your own and laugh at the times you thought Anime was anything more than mindless Alienation (Nothing wrong with some good ole alienation, but you should be able to realize when you are doing something purely for your own personal pleasure).

Harry Potter is literally a 21st century version of Charles Dickens books. Just some shallow bullshit about some guy with some nice inner traits that carry him through an adventure. Sure it can be entertaining, but it's simply not that good.
