The cantos of Ezra Pound

Hey,
I am just starting to read some of Pound's cantos. Though I find them very hard and sometimes tedious, I still enjoy parts of the little I have read.

Maybe some of you who are more familiar to the cantos than myself have some tips on how to approach these poems? Also, I would be very interested in hearing what /lit's favourite canto is.

but you gotta acknowledge the uglier side of his personality. It's okay to read works by problematic authors, but you that doesn't mean you can just excuse away all the unpleasantries. Jewish people and POC may find Pound somewhat harder to appreciate, it's important to keep that in mind.

can't help you OP, they're almost all beyond me too. Call me in 10 years. Even though I frown at people who have to look up an analysis of The Wasteland, I see absolutely no shame in using a reader for the cantos. I did for the first few before giving up and just reading the most famous ones like I, IV, and LXXXI.

My favorite is still Canto I but that's because I don't have the learning or patience required to get through much more than that. I like his lyrics a lot though, try reading Ripostes.

you can still read his work of course, but you need to keep in mind he was not exactly a good person. it's also important to reflect on his problematic ideas and the way they still impact our society to this day, but this goes for pretty much every author

Seeing as you can teach an entire university course on the cantos I dont think there is any shame in needing guidance through it. Im going through it in a modernism course right now and its tough. Pound assumes you know a lot of allusions that most human beings dont know. The dude spent like 50 years writing it and never even completed it, so I dont think its meant to be easy.
