Are there any good books that deal with why doing things is preferable to lying around doing nothing?

It's easier to withstand bad things if your actions also bring you good things. If you don't do much, I'd say that bad things are harder to overcome.

Peter Singer's books... not Animal Liberation, the more recent books on finding worth through philanthropy and whatnot.
