Von Clausewitz´s On War is basically an autobiography, Il Principe too.

Bismarcks memoires are also very good, I really admire him, great guy, brilliant statesman.

Gore Vidal's done a huge amount of interesting historical novels. My personal favourites are Burr, Julian, and Lincoln. Not particularly controversial choices I know, but maybe the public got it right this time.

It would also be a crime to ignore the Claudius novels of Robert Graves.
