Thoughts on The Castle? What's it about? Religious transcendence? Just a stupid Castle? What do you guys think? I studied The Trial in University where the Prof gave a sort of stupid reading about original sin and universal guilt when it seemed to me something less concrete and more abstractly about slander and persecution. How do you guys read Kafka? Do you think there are clean allegories, or is it just dreamlike stuff you shouldn't look too far into? But even then, what would you call the main themes or motifs of The Castle? I'm very confused by the book

I love the book because of how weird it is and you can't really say why. Everything just doesn't feel right. It's like the whole time you're stuck in a dream where real life rules don't apply and everyone act's strangely/unrealistically.

It's been a while since I read it. I remember thinking at the time one of the major themes of the book was Kafka showing that many rules/laws/customs are ridiculous yet not many realize they are and once you do it's like stepping into a psych ward where everyone's crazy.
All these invisible barriers are put all around us and we follow them not even giving them a thought but Kafka show's them in such a way that they are funny and become ridiculous.

It's like there are these rules and you realize they are utterly ridiculous but what can you do to change them when the rest of the town folk think they are fine and well think you're crazy if you go against them.

I really dislike minimalist bookcovers like that. It doesn't look good and it feels really lazy. I'd rather have something that still looks interesting the third or fourth time I see it. I'm glad that my copy looks better.

Anyway, to me the Castle felt like when you're in a dream. With all those absurd rules and social standings that feel real and at the same are completely ridiculous. The best parts for me were the arguments where K tried to go against the bureaucratic dream logic (that's like the entire books I guess). Also, the assistants were hilarious.

This was my first Kafka and 100 pages in I knew I wanted to read all Kafka's work.

Could you give more explanation about the trial?

I just read it and never looked up anything about it online and to me, it seems like something like this: Nobody escapes the burden and problems of life that is in itself very absurd (the trial and so on) and to help themselves/overcome struggle people look up to various escapes - art/aesthetics (painter), religion etc.. (people who K. interferes with). Obviously the work is much more complex than this but I dont want to write down full analysis. The end to me is like an allegory for death that cant be expected - that we are in no control over our lives and that you can die any-time.

But maybe I'm completely retarded.

what i got out of it was something like the lower court being the people and the higher court being an authority and the way the lower courts, hidden in broad daylight would convict people and throw them into the spotlight of the higher court who finds everyone guilty. a sort of vague exploration of the power of masses and slander (as it was slander that the narrator presumes put josef k in his position) and scapegoating and the way a community can so easily turn on one of its own

Naw, but this book is a masterpiece. It Points out the inability people have understanding each other, and thus can't even properly comprehending a system created by others(like beuacracy or government). Also this book is filled with moments that critique the idea the things are unattainable not because they are intrigically distant, but because people say they are unattainable.

Anyways this book is like a LSD trip mixed with a fireside chat between Freud and Hegal.
