I really enjoyed this book and I'm about to read "Into Thin Air" as I hear krakauer's other work is just as great but I'm wondering if you can rec me some books I might enjoy if I enjoyed "Into The Wild"?

Yes I understand this and honestly I'm not quite sure about how I feel about Chris myself. As to why I enjoyed it, well I felt it was a really detailed book and it answered most of my questions I had after watching the movie. I really enjoyed Krakaure's journalistic style of writing also.

its an interesting read, but it's not the same thing at all, don't get confused.
But you can really try reading all the stuff Chris has (it's all in the book.) That will get you well "his kind of feel" i suppose. Allthough none of those books resemble Into the Wild itself. Doing that was what got me into some more "serious" reading for the first time. I was 17 when i read Into the wild and that same month i finished most books Chris read. After War and Peace i got started good.

The one thing that really griped me with Krakauer was that he showed only negative letters about Chris, it seemed very odd that he didn't show any positive ones.

I think with Chris it's extremely complicated and I think I'll sit on the fence forever about him.

As for a recommendation that's hard to give from what you said you enjoyed about it.

Electric Kool-Aid Test is my favorite novel. It's Tom Wolfe documenting a group of hippies, all true story.Krakauer's detail is nothing on Wolfe. It's amazing. Read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest first, it's author, Ken Kesey, is the main person Wolfe writes about in Kool-Aid Test.

Read Hunter S Thompson's Hell's Angel's, so good, then read The Great Shark Hunt, it's a collection of articles.

Yes I understand what you are saying when it comes to the letters, as far as I go I am a pretty new reader and I'm pretty new to literature in general so I think this is why I didn't pick up on this at first so I thank you for pointing this out.

As for me I don't know how long I'll sit on the fence about him because I honestly see the greats in Chris but I also see the extreme faults about him. But I don't think I will be thinking to much about him now that I'm finished reading, my mind will get stuck on something else in the next book I read.

Thanks for the recommendations, "Electric Kool-Aid" sounds like a really interesting book which I'm going to do some research on in a minute. Hopefully I can find it at my local library!

It's pretty popular. I'm sure you'll find it, and I agree with the other anon on Thompson. A lot different from Krakauer as the author is an essential part of the narrative, but it is unprecedented and fantastic writing. One of my favorite authors.

Piece of shit story OP. I've only seen the movie but it pissed me off to no end. Such a meaningless ending. What is the point of writing a novel glorifying the real life story of a man on his way to self discovery, if the whole thing ends in a fiasco with him dying because he ate some poison berries? I can only imagine that the book is just as much of a farce. The whole story can only redeem itself if you decide to see it from a nihilistic point of view, or if it's purpose was to be some sort of satire aimed at all these people suddenly getting into self-discovery and shit.
Seriously, what is the point of writing a story based on real-life events if you're going to follow the real-life story all the way? Was this done to raise awareness about the dangers of wild camping without any proper knowledge of your surroundings and eating poison berries? Or was the author just some boring, uninspired twat who couldn't even come up with their own ideas and had to capitalize on some touching story he read in the news?
Fuck off.
There are very few books out there which managed to piss me off as much as this one had.

I also saw a lot of Into the Wild in The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon. Its title is kinda pop-historyish, but i was impressed by the scholarship from notes in it. It is the story Col. Percy Fawcett, who went searching for El Dorado, and probably got eaten by cannibals.

Its called narrative non-fiction, and sometimes even journalism, which is what Krakauer is. He wrote for outside magazine for like 15 years. He originally reported on this story. Im having a hard time wrapping my head around your attitude, its like the shitters claiming that non-fiction books dont deserve the Nobel.
