Why is it okay for people to claim that this is the best novel ever written? I just want to know why he gets away with it and I'll keep reading. Most people consider saidisms YA tier.

I just started reading Joyce this year and was immediately taken aback with how perfect his small descriptions are. But Ulysses is great beyond just his personal style, it has a lot of misleadings and open spaces for the reader to fill in. In the third episode, the ineluctable modality of the visible part, Stephens talking about color and there's that Italian quote from Dante that says "color" so the reader assumes its something about color, but its actually translates to something like "The master owns those who know." But the misinterpretation of the reader is not completely invalid.

There's a lot of that. Like "the truth found in mistakes." The whole text is really thought provoking just because of that.

The various 'rules' for writing you see generally exist to make bad writing better. They are not absolute requirements for great writing, which can break as many 'rules' as it likes as long as the effect is good.

For it's exstensive intertextuality, for the remarkable prose, the portrayal of Irish culture and just simply how *fun* the whole thing reads. Seriously, just go ahead and read it aloud. Even do a fake little "oirish" accent while doing so. It may seem intimidating and nonsensical at first, but it's a really fun book.

Avoiding a said-ism is a tip for beginning writers. Being able to describe, and by that I mean describe well, how somebody says something is a difficult task. It's better for beginning writers to avoid it entirely and let the dialogue color itself.
