The book came first. You learn to have a kneejerk reaction of hate towards Damon Lindelhoff, who made the shitshow that was LOST, but shit like this makes you realize he has some basic writing skills. The book was filled to the brim with shitty writing, rank misogyny, and stupid scenes that make zero sense that you appreciate his ability to carve something decent out of this trash.
Honestly, tho, I think the HBO SJW team probably helped cull a lot of the basic bullshit, like the hilariously one-dimensional women. Maybe Damon sucks and we're right to hate him, and directors are just brands to sell TV shows created by armies of creative professionals.
Worst scene in the book is when one male character notes that he's matching the body language of a female character, and he realizes this is like an article he read a while ago which explained that means you like them. That shit was the cringiest shit in the book, and was what made me face the simple fact the book isn't that good.
