it started off pretty well but got progressively more and more preachy as it went on, more blatant even than narnia. the last book was painful.

I saw the movie too and found it quite bad.
Read the books, though the first one is not the most interesting by far, the rest of the trilogy is gold

religious-allegorical fantasy reached the point where it needed to stop with Voyage to Arcturus and everything else in the genre in the last 100 years has clearly passed it.
