Whenever I read passages from him I'm genuinly impressed by the level of authenticity he can achieve, even if he is a total creeper goblin.

I think he has some value beyond meme'n. I don't know if he is best understood as a culture critic though.

Also not sure if I would read an entire book of his. Maybe some essays.

This tbh. Houellebecq is a horrible, damaged human being, but there's something very beautiful about the way he pours the diseased contents of his heart in a book.

I think seeing that movie, the Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq may have warped my perception of him, but I don't see him much more as an institution, a critic of modern French culture as much as I see him as a weird novelist who's just speaking his mind

I wish I was able to understand french so I could listen to some of his interviews. I bet he is one of those people who can come off as intelligent if he has enough time to edit and re-edit whatever he wrote (probably while checking other sources so he can grab a sentence or two) but sounds like a complete idiot off the cuff.

He's probably not very sharp and developed this "persona" to help hide it, I assume.

I can totally understand him. If people decide he sounds a bit too banal when articulating some of his positions he might lose his privileged position in public perception.

did you ever think about the fact that maybe he doesnt want a persona to hide under, or that he doesnt want to actively articulate his positions outside his written work like some sort of pundit?
