I especially liked the Master of Go by Kawabata, and while Snow Country was not my cup of tea, everyone seems to be reading it and loving it.

Also more bizarrely, Hubert Selby Jr reading has increased as Halloween approaches

Knausgaurd and Elena Ferrante were big last year, both with several volume series. I enjoyed both, especially the latest Ferrante. The latest Franzen was entirely skippable. Dalkey Archive hasn't released the new Arno Schmidt translation yet, which has been disappointing. Idk about short stories, a recent collection of all of Clarice Lispector's stories just came out and had everyone writing about her for like two weeks. She has some great stuff.

When are you "done" with the classics?

Sort of a discussion cue question, I've been working my way through the classics for 20 years and am not close to done. I'm at the "Gogol, Proust, Eliot" point and have just about had it.

Honestly, I like Harold Bloom's list of the western canon, not for anything modern but for the Classics. I've been working through it for a few years now and I'm starting to feel like I've given myself a good classical education. I've read hundreds of books and plays from that list, and it has helped my critical reading abilities immensely.

I don't think there will be a moment when I feel "done" with the classics, but I sometimes get a really satisfied feeling when I finish a Dostoevsky or something like that. That feeling is really why I keep exploring the classics, rather than some obscure idea of finishing them. There will always be another undiscovered author who influenced some writer that you'll feel the need to read, but that's the fun of it. I don't think it's supposed to be a checklist, but a process of learning to love literature.

If you are just get to Gogol and Proust, and you are feeling "finished", then you probably still have a ways to go to be considered a master of the classics, but maybe it will be enough for you. Reading for 20 years means you probably know your own tastes pretty well, and perhaps there isn't anything for you in the old masters.

Funny. I never knew this board to read Hubert Selby Jr, although I personally quite enjoyed Last Exit to Brooklyn (although I felt it was very hit and miss).

Journey to the End of Night looks good, I might get a copy soon. Seems like me kind of thing, both historical and nihilistic.

How can you have had it when you're at Gogol? He's amazing. Currently reading his Ukrainian Tales, the last few of his stories I haven't read. They're pretty great, although not as refined as his Petersburg Tales, which, in turn, fall short of Dead Souls, a legitimate masterpiece.

What I am saying is that it is exhausting to have a nearly endless list of books that you are "supposed" to read. Ive taken a good bite out of the canon, but I will never be done. And if one branches out into post-structuralist, feminist, or romantic/gothic works I sort of feel anxiety at never being able to read it all.
