I don't have a problem with Ulysses, Joyce himself was overall pretentious beyond belief, but I enjoyed Ulysses -- it just doesn't live up NEARLY to the pretentious-reddit-hipster hype of "amg greatest book evar"

What the fuck is this bullshit. Holy fuck. I know this chapter is supposedly hated by first time readers, and I was no exception here. This brought the book to a grinding halt for me, and felt like so out of place and just shit.

I truly got nothing from this chapter what so ever.

I know the only answer is that it might change on a second reading, but for now all I can do is take that on faith because my direct experience with it was that it was a huge scoop of shit in an otherwise masterful work of prose.

Dubliners is very conventional, and a bit boring aside from occasional good prose. If you don't care about Dublin and the time period you won't get much out of most stories.
Joyce has noticeably evolved in Portrait and experiments a bit more, but it's still almost normal and incomparably easier than Ulysses.
