It's not really loved for it's literary value, but for it's philosophy. Camus was first and foremost a philosopher. He just wrote about philosophy in a narrative format. The Stranger basically espouses Camus' ideas about existentialism. It is highly praised for being a (then) unique take on these ideas and even invented some of them.

You need to have some familiarity with philosophy before you can really understand the significance of the book in context.

I like it not for its philosophy but for camus's writing, but i'm sure i'm just a pleb, i really disliked the character though most of all, regardless of his viewpoints

I do not understand what merits this books praise. If it is a book of philosophy it is weak as existentialism is easily refutable. As a novel i fail to see what makes it interesting outside of minimal style and antihereo
