Magenta understands Japanese grammar fine but his vocabulary and knowledge are extremely limited (when Gaim was airing he displayed gross ignorance of standard warring states era stuff like never having heard of the battle of Sekigahara), plus he has the ridiculous idea that he has a duty to localise names for no fucking reason.

Oh and all that shit he went on about Sengoku's goku using 極 being the Japanese equivalent of spelling extreme as Xtreme was plain bullshit, he doesn't seem to understand ateji at all.

Absolutely. A good translation is self-evident: you pick up everything you need to know from the context and the lines. I've never seen a TL note that was actually needed to get an important point across.

If there's something truly untranslatable (you can sub kotatsu as heated table to get across why a character might want it for winter, but maybe the kotatsu is never actually used in the show and so the literal purpose isn't evident), it can be in the liner notes and a curious viewer will check or just Google it later for more information. It shouldn't just be on the screen when the original didn't intend the line to be a learning experience or a strange new concept.

If you're into old lucha rivalries it was a slighyl less terrible match because the Villanos and Psycho Clown's family have been enemies for a billion years, but even then it wasn't much.
