To be fair, an idol group was easily the next logical progression to mix up the musical style especially when taking into account Kawamori's love of idols. The other likely option was Vocaloid expies, but they already have Sharon kind of fulfilling that role.

Because I'm not sure what Sukhoi/Dornier got folded into in the Macross universe. As far as I know, the only major competitors are Shinsei/LAI and General Galaxy and the SV-262 looks like a GG craft (aspects of both the YF/VF-21/22 and the VF-27 in there).

Also, judging from the gunpod's similarity to the VF-27, I'd imagine its a beam gunpod. Considering how the VF-31's twin gunpods are too small to carry much ammo, I'd imagine those are beam spec too.

Before Escaflowne, there was Air Cavalry Chronicles. It's about a war between knights piloting VFs. The antagonist is a Germanic empire with gigantic castle as its base.

Some of the "German" VFs were later redesigned into the Varauta VFs.

Also, why are they in valks at all? I know that was Basara's thing, but he was kind of an insurgent. If these people are government sanctioned, why not just have them do their thing on the bridge of Battle Whatever?
