There's even a subtle reference to it with Sailor Uranus. She's an aspiring Formula One racer, and her color scheme is blue and yellow/gold, which were the colors on his car and helmet when he was driving for Rothman's. Drive Type Formula is very similar.
When you see a Formula One car in a Japanese show and it's blue/white/gold, it's probably intended as a reference to Ayrton Senna.
