You'll find it people posting about it or listing dates from years back, long before April of this year. Or 2014. Or 2013.

There was a period before then where they weren't, because very little Gundam was coming across the way, but long ago you could find kits in some stores. The current wide-scale deployment is the result of a deal with a supplier.

Borders/Waldenbooks looked like ghetto Barnes and Nobles in my hometown. And they had way too much music; the flagship Borders had a whole floor of just music, no books.

B&N always had nicer displays and kids sections, and they had a cafe with decent snacks. Now they're the only ones left and I love the first-gen Nook Glowlight more than other eReaders.

I'm one of those faggots who actually likes the little Converge figurines. the B&N in my area somehow got the wave with the Turn A and Turn X, so I swung on over to grab them once I had some spare cash. When I got there, all they had left were like two Zaku Is and a G-Falcon. I ended up being "that guy" and asking someone if they had any more in stock, but they told me they generally only get one or two boxes of something and once they're gone, that's it.

A lot of barnes and noble are sort of "Upgrading" their displays for gunpla. Instead of just a shelf, it has its own little stand thing with a bigger case on top and they're being sent several pre-built models that aren't covered in nubs for once.

BN is actually in bad shape. It's not a healthy company right now. Reading for pleasure is at an all time low among the American populace. (and is trending even farther downward in the future)

To survive, BN has been putting in toy/collectibles areas. Usually in the heart of the store.

Over the last few years these areas have grown and are starting to push out books. My local 2 stores actually have half the store devoted to it and the nook shilling. Selection has become pretty piss poor because of it.

The difference is that toy collecting is a FAR more niche business. Collectors can and do get really picky and aren't afraid to just not buy anything. Gamers will still pick up a game that is in reasonable shape. As long as you give them a few patches and maybe some DLC they will be satiated.

Probably because, as sad as it sounds, the black series is probably the best quality Star Wars figures of that scale have ever seen before.

Star Wars sells like hotcakes, but its toylines have never really been that detailed outside of a very few exceptions.

Thats almost the same figure twice, it took me a while to notice that they were different. But anyway the movies not even out yet, people arent going to buy figures for characters that that they dn't know or care about, and they don't have the cool factor that kylo ren or captain phasm or stormtroopers that you can army build. those figures look pretty shitty anyway though. it kind of feels like theyre deliberately trying to kill off the 3.75 inch figure line, they've dropped to happy meal quality

As s side note, the sphero bb-8 is pretty cool, but I ended up returning it because it wasn't really $150 worth of fun and I couldn't really see myself playing with it after a week. Plus I don't think its worth keeping to resell because pretty much everyone is scalping them for christmas (everyone is thinking its going to be a popular gift this year) so the market is going to be flooded with them.

I was tempted to get a Zaku I in case it was the Borjarnon. I don't hate the design or anything, it's just kind of boring since it doesn't have any weapons or anything. There's a Black Tri-Star chase figure from an older wave that comes with a machine gun and one of those punch shields.

My local store's been carrying them for about a year now, they just recently moved them from the shelf with the Lego Architect stuff to their own stand with the display shelf on top. "Skill level" was based on the number of parts the kit had iirc. The reason they added it to the kits was that a lot of common model kits in the US had a difficulty level attached to them at the time, although those were based on things like requiring glue, paint, drilling, etc.

As someone who's been out of US model building for long time, is this still true? I remember buying old star trek kits where you had to glue/paint/decal and it was a nightmare for a young beginner.

Snap builds and color reproduction has come a HUGE way in Japan, surely that carried over in the west a bit.

It has, but a lot of US companies cling to "tradition" and "customization" to keep using the same molds.

There have been better trek models produced. There was actually a decent Enterprise D put out a few years ago. (though its downside was that it was far smaller than the 90s kit that came out when the show was on air.)

Disney world sells that sort of shit? That actually reminds me. When I was younger I went to Lotte world or whatever in Korea and their gift shop had some Gundam Origin figure. It was the Origin version RX-78-2. Kind of a weird place to find Gundam figures but then again B&N stocks gunpla these days

yeah in the Japan pavillion at Epcot they've had Gundam kits going back to... the mid90s I think from personal recollection, and I've heard of them having old robot kits in the model kit shop in Future World back in the early 80s

I went there in third grade, and I remember being super fucking excited when we got to the Japan pavillion. I begged my mom for a Gundam Epyon kit or a Black Wargreymon, and she said we'd come back for one before we left the park that night. We did not come back.

Still haven't bought an Epyon kit, really should one of these days. Its still one of my favorite designs.

There was an anon on /toy/ who worked for B&N that made a thread about this at some point. If I remember correctly, according to him the kits were made by random store employees- usually on break or lunch or something- and then thrown into the display. The stores apparently don't take it too seriously and aren't really looking for hobbyists to build them; they just want them out there on display in some form.

Don't know about others but ours arrived in pieces (hands, shoulder, torso, shoulder armor, basically sub assemblies) and the person in charge of it had to figure out how to put it together and ended up snapping the v-fin. They also said that the swords were backwards in the display because they were like that when they arrived and the hands were glued shut around them.
