Its really not so much as 'clinging' with me. I never grew up with Robotech (born in 87), so I spent most of my time with Toonami as my main introduction to anime in the 90s and never saw anything of Robotech except for the occasional controversy or two in magazine articles. When I finally watched Robotech after finishing up Macross a couple of years ago, the entire three-saga story just...really didn't work for me. With the way things were set up it just felt incredibly rushed, disjointed, and leaving far too many plot holes in its wake by the time it reached the end.
This is why I prefer Robotech as a comic series rather than an "epic anime series" as many hail it as. I know I sound like a broken record, but these comic books are just something else. They're definitely not perfect as you'll find yourself running face-first is some pretty wacked out stupid shit every once in a while, but there's a certain charm to them; Not only do they help clear up most of the plot holes, but they actually took what was given in the three sagas and expanded on them, giving us some visible and problematic antagonists, some interesting alien races, and some pretty exciting battles that helped polish the otherwise scrambled lore. Really, they kinda remind me of the original Battlestar Galactica; a neat little mix of 80s sci-fi action, storytelling, and occasional goofiness.
Of course, I don't consider this stuff 'true masterpieces' over Star Wars and Star Trek many RT fans like to boast, nor am I hoping or supporting harmony Gold with making future installments since they clearly don't know what they're doing. At this point I am satisfied with what has been accomplished, with anyone that had any real vision in Robotech has either left or died long ago.
