It holds up, but in terms of the audience a large number of people who don't have knowledge of the franchise could probably dismiss it as another Haremshit at a glance. I simply find it hard to get excited for it because it stalled out so much. It's not like Fafner where they had a huge gap between seasons but also had an OVA and a movie (and even then Exodus didn't really get me excited until it proved its worth), it's been almost ten years since the last animated entry into the franchise. You'll have to excuse me if my interest has atrophied a bit.

I'm not going to get super hype for a new season. I'm not looking down on it, either. My reaction is just "oh, neat" and I can't help but feel that if they got around to this sooner rather than later then the announcement would have gotten a different reaction. I can't be the only person with a lukewarm impression about the news.

How do I know this, you ask?

I actually watched first season of FMP all the way back in 2004. I enjoyed it a little but it never got me into mecha. A few years later I came across Getter Robo Armageddon, and loved the fuck out of it, and I've been a fan of mecha ever since.

FMP is nice, but I would be lying if I said I remembered anything about the mecha in the show. All I remember is that the MC was a gunfag and there are two girls in it, with differing hair colours. I don't even remember their names.

Can it be saved? /m/ pretty much lost all it's board culture at this point and is obsessed with trolling and regurgitating /v/ memes. It's now acceptable to try to kick actually /m/ shows like G-Reco and Valvrave off the board. It's not acceptable to talk about any show positively. What kind of discussion can you have when the community, or a vocal minority controls discuss refuses to allow civil dialog of any kind?

The only solution I can see is heavy moderation, and that would just make things worse.

I don't know how to get a community that only values shitposting to allow discussion other than shitposting.

Fumoffu references the first season (The submarine being repaired after Gauron's attack), and Second Raid references Fumoffu with that photograph they took when they visited the hot springs that Tessa has on her desk

How about you look at say MAL and check out how many people have seen or favorited Geass or Gurren, look at their scores, and see how much lower the original Gundam TV series is in every category. Geass, Eva, and Gurren are all three very very entry level series by statistics. They aren't what I'd recommend as first series to watch, but that's how it turned out.

It's more like the barriers of entry for Fafner are much higher than most other shows.

It's got a weak opening from a poor original director choice that we acknowledge but improves on rewatching and their is plenty of side material to improve the watching.

Then it has average to low quality animation in the original series so people aren't going to be pulled in that easy like something flashier that gives instant gratification.

Then it also has Hiraiface which normals kneejerk against hardcore because they think it's expected you're supposed to.

And now the mecha fights use CGI (Good CGI) which causes more kneejerking from normals.

Keep in mind that Fafner was never assumed to be dead. It had a movie back on Christmas 2010 that left a lot of stuff open for a sequel series, and Xebec never indicated that they were done.

Fafner has higher sales than Gundam at the moment. Outsold the other mech shows save G-Reco in Winter too.
