You posted a gargantia picture, so I will presume you enjoyed that. I, too, enjoyed Gargantia.
In that case, a must is the Expelled From paradise movie on Netflix. Its totally CG, but you gets used to that pretty quick.
Otherwise, give SDF Macross a try. The animation is old, but its really solid scifi once you get into it, and if you end up liking SDF there is lots more Macross where that came from.
Eureka Seven is a love story that happens to have mecha in it, but its a well done love story and it looks great.
The first Season of Code Geass is good. The second season of Code Geass is less good, but not unwatchable.
Star Driver and Captain Earth are both deeply flawed shows that have some redeeming qualities.
Gunbuster, Evangelion, and TTGL are basically classics. Evangelion is better if you save it for later, though, since its best used in contrast to other mecha shows instead of the first mecha you watch.
Knights of Sidonia is a bit funky, but worth a watch since there isn't really anything else quite like it. Its basically Attack on Titan in space, but instead of turning into shonen shit it gets a bump on its head and thinks its a harem anime for half of the second season.
Fafner is good, but prepare for suffering.
Things I would recommend you avoid if you care mostly about story: Valvrave, Aldnoah Zero, the vast majority of Gundam
