I live in the states and I don't know or have met one single person who likes my little ponies, but I'm not gonna assume no-one here gives a shit about it cuz I know they're here. It's the same as saying only the things you like are popular because you only hangout with like-minded people (friends).

Star Wars is its own thing, geeks do the whole "my team is better than your team", but nerds appreciate both.
Trek inspired generations of people to become scientists and astronauts, Wars inspired film tech and generations of movie and video game developers.
Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Doctor Who are the other legacy SF series.
