This is something I've always felt with him. Makes it fun deciphering a characters motivations and true intentions because Tomino doesn't spell it out all that often.

Yup. His settings aren't just window dressing, they're an integral part of why the narrative plays out the way it does. No other writer has managed to successfully bring to television or film an earnest and serious portrayal of what it means to have half of humanity living in space (and what's more, having had that been the case for decades, such that the conflict comes from within society instead of from the difficulty of living in space). No one else has pulled off that scope. Battlestar Galactica comes close.

Doing the storyboards is way more important than being script writer that is why King Gainer feels like a Tomino show although the Code Geass guy wrote it.

Script writing is a by-episode execution of a concept. Being credited as the creator means he (along with the Sunrise working on it) wrote the concept for the show. Every time this is brought up people claim the script writers just pulled the entire show out of their ass by writing the scripts for each episode.

It's not like some guys just went to Sunrise and tossed them a script. The studio said "let's write some concepts for some shitty anime" first.

Did you actually watch it? It depicted colony life pretty well and the dangers of being attacked by hostile aliens. One episode had all the colonists rationing water and having to wear oxygen masks to conserve air.

7 and Frontier both blew me way with how they depicted space colonies. City 7 feels like a comfy space suburb - somewhere you'd like to live. While Island-1 really feels dangerous and small, like the "frontier", so you really see why Alto want to find his "wide open sky". And you never see much of Galaxy, but Sheryl feels a lot like a city girl who moves to the frontier.

And of course, the original was great. SDF feels like a timeless romance story in direction.

Tomino makes some great settings too, but I wanted to gush about Macross here.
