Because they'd already laid the groundwork for the franchise to be popular with the repeat airings and the toys and the fan campaigns. A lot of people had already been working hard to make it popular, then the movies came along and made it accessible to even more people. They cemented Gundam's popularity.

Like this anon said. Gundam really got popular after it's initial run. So a lot of people were circulating vhs recordings of episode, buying the toys and what not. But people who missed it's first run wouldn't have a chance to see it until these movies came out.

So I don't think it had anything to do with one being better than the other, more the circumstances surrounding the release of each.

The movies are SUPERIOR (agreed on by /m/, /a/, MAL, ANN and even freaking Japan!!!) There were no boring icky filler episodes (>.<) that develop important characters and they fixed the GODAWFUL animation and made it look SPECTACULARLY AMAZING in the movies.

I finished it yesterday. The ending was a bit trippy with all that Lalah stuff and newtypes being chucked in at the last minute, but it was kind of cool seeing Zeon crumble in the span of two episodes (and seeing Char shoot Zycilia or whatever's head off with a rocket).

I have no idea what's going on with Zeta, though. So Char is back, but it's not Char, Bright is a bad guy and not Char is good? I'm only on the seventh episode, but I feel like I'm supposed to know exactly what's going on and I don't.

Compilation movies were really popular in Japan because it was either expensive or impossible to get series to rewatch later, but easier to just get a movie on VHS. For some reason they still make them occasionally even though they are pointless.
