Why is the quality of everything about War in the Pocket (From the story to the music to the fights) just so much better than the rest of the UC canon?

Sorry G, best fights is split between 0079 and Victory, music is Unicorn's thing
The story's better because it's all focused on the characters so you kind of build a connection with them.

I love 0080 on the whole, but the music and fights never blew me away and I think the first half of the OVA is actually kind of boring. I understand that it's all necessary stuff, but that doesn't mean it isn't boring. Gunbuster and Diebuster are pretty much the same. Maybe it's just a pacing thing with 6 episode OVAs in general.

Story didn't have a lot of the tropes weighing it down like so many other shows. MC never became a badass. MC didn't even accomplish anything worthwhile.

What makes it so great is its focus on a small, personal conflict and the way it concisely illustrates the tragedy of war.
The soundtrack is honestly one of the weakest in UC, though. I'd personally give Victory the title of best UC OST.

I mean, appreciating the soundtracks from older anime is going to be pretty niche anyways, and I'm aware that there's a huge fanbase for Unicorn's OST because the series was enormously popular and Sawano has a lot of hardcore fanboys, but there are plenty of people, especially here on /m/, who love the soundtracks to older Gundam series.

Kind of a trope in and of itself right there though.
It's unique for Gundam, but the 'dies needlessly and goes unnoticed' is a pretty well worn war story type.

and I'm gonna add to the vote regarding the music. 0080 is a pretty strong OVA, but the music is honestly some of the weakest in the Gundam line.
