The problem is after the tv show treated just about everything like a joke, the movie played everything dead serious and completely straight. The silly people that thought they were in a mech anime because they had nothing but Gekiganger to watch for over a century suddenly cut out the theatrics completely and started kidnapping and doing human experimentation and conspiricies.
If at the end when Yurika was saved Akito tossed off his edge suit and stopped growling and said well everything is fine again, that would have been totally in line with the tv show, where just about everything dramatic was eventually played off as a joke.
Instead he's all "No I'm ruined forever" and edges off into the night.
It's like you're watching Shadowcells Seed fanfics, only it's the actual show in continuity with past events.
