I get that unique units exist to sell toys, but it all too often comes at the expense of suspension of disbelief, as well as making the distinction between Super and Real pointless.
I got a better idea: The protagonists pilot variants or custom versions of regular units. The heroes don't look like bullshit, and the toy companies are happy. Everyone wins.
