I've read a lot of Nagai and Ishikawa stuff, so I'm looking for something else. What's worth reading?

Stuff without an English translation is fine.

Assuming you've done all the Nagai/Ishikawa stuff which actually makes the bulk of mecha manga now I think about it....

I'll just list all the common recommendations and stuff I like in general.

Bokurano, Kurogane no Linebarrel, Giant Robo, Plot to Assassinate Gihren Zabi, Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio, Break Blade, Kamisama Dolls, MS Gundam: Blue Destiny, Crossbone Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam: Ecole du Ciel, Robot Keiji (Ishinori Shotaro in general)

I liked only the first part of Giant Robo, when Daisaku was drawn as an actual 17 years old boy. After that he's drawn like a kid to resemble the live-action protagonist. And they talk about the Marvel Cinematic Universe affecting the comics.

FSS isn't really centered on the mecha though, they're merely part of the setting. Even the KOG, the protagonist mech, hasn't had any action since the first few volumes.

Now if you want an even more wild version of Dune in manga form, you would read FSS.

Prove it. Because I'm pretty sure he was drawn more child-like to capitalize on the popularity of Tetsujin-28.

Hirayama wanted a kid protagonist. He saw Yokoyama was working on Giant Robo while he was visiting him to discuss Akakage. He liked the idea and then bought the rights for the adaptation before even reading the manga.

Mecha manga has an annoying habit of being incompletely translated if they're long-running enough.

I'm grateful that Getter Robo is fully translated... though ironically that ended for a different reason.

There are a lot of Macross manga, most of which are untranslated and a sizable chunk aren't even scanned.

Might be worth going through those.
