>>13425666The Alex was an RX-78 Derivative, just like the rest of the Gundams in the OYW. Technically, GP01 was too, just with some Zeon tech thrown in here and there.
Mark II wasn't an RX-78 derivative; instead it uses an entirely new construction method that combines the advantages of Zeon and Federation design philosophies.
As for the Model number, the RX designates "'Renpou' experimental unit" and the 178 designates that it's the 8th type of mobile suit produced at Gryps, with the GM-II being the 9th. That's why the GM II has two model numbers; fresh units were produced at Gryps under RMS-179 while older GMs refitted with II parts were RGM-79R. The first two numbers designate where the machine was produced. "10" means Von Braun or Anaheim with Hizack and Marasai being "RMS-10[x] units. "17" means Gryps."12" means Konpei, hence the Hazel being the RX-121, and "16" means Kiliminjaro, hence the Byarlant and Eagley both having "RX-16[x]" model numbers. Augusta follows it's own number system, with ORX prefacing their units.
