I'm just trying to figure out the series of decisions that resulted in this show. It's like Fist of the North Star with robots set to a smooth jazz soundtrack. How does that even happen?

It bears very little resemblance to Fist of the North Star. The best you can say is that they both have post-apocalyptic settings, but even then there's not much similarity since while the plot of X relies on it taking place after a disaster very little of the actual episode to episode stuff does and it rarely ever come across as all that apocalyptic. Which is fine, but using Fist of the North Star as a descriptor seems flawed because of it.

It's setting is more like Vampire Hunter D or something perhaps, in that it all obviously takes place in a setting where things have gone to pot, but it's long enough after such that most everything you could want is there if you do a little work to find it.

No, really, it's like the post-apocalyptic setting was all a big trick to lure you into one of the most uplifting and comfy Gundam shows ever. It's almost as if the writers feel that civilization being wiped almost completely away would be a good thing to free the younger generation from the shackles of past events.
