Can you guys tell me the truth about the Zaku I? I've heard two conflicting explanations for why it was replaced by the Zaku I

First Zeon used the Zaku I. Then they made a better Zaku, the Zaku II, and they phased out the Zaku Is and replaced them with Zaku IIs.

Pretty simple really.

that sounds like the Zudah. maybe you or your friend are getting them mixed up.

The Zaku II wasn't any easier to control, just cheaper to produce. The relationship between the Zaku and Zaku II is basically the same as that of the Gundam and GM.

Sort of. They made the MS-06A, which was a slight improvement over the MS-05. Then the Zeon generals said "No, we didn't tell you to make it more expensive, we told you to REFINE it, so the MS-06C was born. Then the generals explained that "refine" does not mean "make it better for the same cost" it means "make it cheaper to make" and so the MS-06F is actually a slight step down from the MS-05 but cheaper to produce than the MS-06C.
