Piney conjures the Wicker Mane! This is a Level 2 Familiar, so it's not as tough as Mighty. But it could still do some considerable damage.

Which it does, by attacking Rem! She has no HP, so she isn't hurt, but she's probably going to be a bit crispy for awhile...

Didn't I mention how FP works before?

There's more than one way to win. The first is be outlasting your opponent until they run out of magic and drop, at which point you're declared the winner by default. Sort of a "last pony standing" deal. This may or may not be Rem's strategy.

The second way to win is by being the first player to get a certain number of FP, usually 10. FP are gained when a Familiar defeats an enemy Familiar or lands a direct shot on the opponent; at that point, the difference in Levels is how many points are gained by the attacker (Players have no level, so in the case of a direct hit like Rem just took, the attacking Familiar's level is automatically the number of FP earned.). But be careful: These points can be lost as well, typically when a lower Level Familiar beats a higher Level one. Right now, the score is 4-0 in Pine Boughs' favor.

There's also a third way to win, which is to meet the requirements of an OTK combination of spells. These are very rare and hard to pull off, but if successful, they override all other win conditions.

Revitalizing, which I explained in the previous thread But in a nutshell it's putting them back in the 'deck' and getting some magic back as a result; you get about half of what whatever you returned would have cost to actively use..

There are no decent suggestions when you're traveling and have no interest in anything in the area.
It's just obligatory difficulty to throw in an encounter for the sake of having one.
If there's nothing interesting happening during something then skip to the end.

Technically yes, it's still you guys' turn. I just assumed everyone's interest had worn off so I held back for awhile. Do you want to continue? I'm just a bit unsure how to continue working this since I'm pretty tired and the next two days are going to be taken up by actual CYOA's. I guess if I continue tonight it'll be text-only since that's the only way I can see it wrapping up before I go to bed.

By this point I think I've covered every major concept. All that's left is Vitality and Terraforming; everything else can be grouped up under another umbrella term.

Maybe I should make a Pastebin of all these rules and glossary terms, huh?

I bet Panzermane would be a huge hit if his quest wasn't so niche. I still can't get over that Treads and Star are damn near opposites in every way you can think of but they're the bestest of friends. Softly is small while Star is hueg, she's more stoic while he's vibrant and animated, Star's friendly nature makes him better with ponies while Treads isn't always the best with others. I know Treads treated her visit with Pyro like an errand but I know that deep down she was at least a little bit nervous to be going into someone's place that isn't Star's.

I believe Hijacker didn't realize how strong he had made Willow so our damage output was insane and he basically tried to avoid that by keeping Steel relatively simple, so Steel went from a Hybrid mage/tank with on call artillery to being fragile and fairly boring in combat.

Then we had the railroad incident where we were injured and then forced into fighting esmeralda in what was basically just a pointless quicktime event where legitimate comboes were discouraged and suggestions partially ignored so that they wouldn't work and we'd just lose options, the fight only amounted to her capture because we had previously trapped her recall point.

After that things improved though, being able to beat the bandits with Tara on a pure stealth run was nice.

It would have been cheap if it were done with a lot of other work. That's a large part of how construction/plumbing/etc works. The primary cost is in getting people out, once you're already doing that everything else is cheaper than you'd think.

Lesson for QMs: If you take a long break from your quest (long is entirely relative) end your first few posts with strong prompts to get people back into playing. Weak starting prompts can cause the strongest quests to start off incredibly slow.

Additionally, if you haven't gotten a response in 30 minutes to your last post, before committing sudoku examine your last post and see if it's a complete non-prompt.

Coltquest and JAD seem to have consistently strong prompts.

Nips has had this issue for the longest time but has a large enough fanbase that it isn't killer.

This is the prompt. The players now have to make a choice. In this case, they choose to trust Joyride and stay.
Two posts later, they're faced with their next prompt:
>Joyride offers to let them rape Stargazer
Once again, the QM has presented the players with something they have to immediately address. Once again, there is no objectively right or wrong decision.
The players choose to not fuck Stargazer.
In the very next post, they're confronted with another prompt:
>Joyride seems pretty morally bankrupt. Now would be a good time to run away, or they could stay with her for protection.
Both paths are credible. The players choose to ignore Joyrides lack of moral inhibitions.
Two posts later, the players are faced with their next prompt:
>A dragon attacks
etc etc

This sort of thing continues throughout the entire quest. There's almost always something happening that the players must confront.

CYOA's operate on a system of prompt → choice → effect.
Without regular prompts, the players won't have to make meaningful choices. If players aren't being challenged to make choices, then why bother playing at all?

Weak prompts are an issue that plague many CYOA's. For a long time it was a huge problem in North Excursion. We could sometimes go for 4-5 updates without a strong prompt, which lead to the players meandering around making small talk with the rest of the crew.
I would also say that the lack of prompts is the reason that Delta P wasn't successful or popular. It had fantastic art, okay writing and cute character designs, but it was ruined because the posts never ended with a prompts. They players didn't have anything to work with.

Another new quest that understands the (prompt → choice → effect) formula is Mendacity.
Every single update ends with a prompt. On top of that, every single choice ends with an effect. Mendacity then goes the extra mile, and will often link the effect into the next prompt.
So in Mendacity, the formula is a continuous chain, where each posts links to its predecessor.
>prompt → choice → effect/prompt → choice → effect/prompt → choice → effect/prompt → choice → etc etc

If we look at the first few posts, we can see this chain in action:
>Prompt: Your daughter is asleep and your wife wants you to wake her up
>Choice: We wake up our daughter
>Effect: Our daughter flies into the kitchen and lands on top of an old rickety cabinet
>Prompt: Our daughter is on top of an old rickety cabinet that might fall over
>Choice: We tell her to get down
>Effect: Our daughter crouches down and springboards off the cabinet, causing to smash against the ground
>Prompt: The cabinet has been smashed to the ground. Our wife insist she can clean it up, and we need to go to work
>Choice: The players choose to stay and help our wife clean
>Effect: We find a rusty gold coin
>Prompt: There's an earthquake outside
Do you notice how most of the prompts and effects are basically the same thing? It's only with the final prompt that the chain is broken, because the earthquake has nothing to do with the previous choice and effect.

This method of off linking each prompt and effect creates the illusion that player choices are actually meaningful. It's this chain of events that create the story.
There's nothing wrong with breaking the chain every so often, but if every prompt is disconnected with previous choices then the CYOA becomes a series of random encounters with no real plot or structure. This is an issue I think ColtQuest needs to keep in mind.

ColtQuest has some really strong prompts that each have multiple equally viable solutions.
After each update ColtQuest can get 20+ posts of discussion, and that's because of the great prompts that divide the players.

There isn't a lot of pointless pausing between things.

A prompt is an event that spurs the players to action.
A great prompt is an event that spurs different players to different actions.

There are a few ways to go about this:
>1) present the player with a problem without a definitive solution
Players might disagree on the best way to confront an issue. They'll then discuss and debate on which solution is best.

Take, for example, the time in Mendacity in which we saw the creature in our house at night.
The players had a decision to make. There wasn't a definitive or objectively superior solution to the prompt. There were a few different options put forward.
The players then had a discussion about the pro's and con's of each option. It was a debate of logic, as players tried to convince each other that their choice was logically better.

>2) present the player with a decision with equally attractive effects
The player collective will experience a conflict of interest.
They'll then discuss and debate on which path to take.

For example, let's look at the time in ColtQuest in which we had to choose whether to be fucked in the ass by Joyride or not.
Now, you're probably thinking "how the fuck is that a good prompt?"
Well, would it surprise you to know that this prompt started a discussion almost 200 posts long?
The reason for that is simple: Different players wanted different things.
Some players get turned on by the thought of being assfucked. Some are disgusted by it.
This conflict of interest is what made the players emotionally invested. They each wanted something different to happen.
And so, they discussed and debated. Each put forward reasons why their choice was best, and argued against the point put forward by their opponents.

I run weekends because I simply don't have time to sit down and run a session during the week.

I'm coming from that perspective too. Was it an actual "discussion" or was it an argument? Because I do like hearing discussion, but usually after 100 posts it enters "argument" territory. And there's been a couple times where it's caused people to leave the thread over it. And less readers isn't very fun.

Splitting the playerbase into long arguments is good, but only in moderation. After a while it get pretty taxing on the players and they begin to resent the other players. Creating x-fags can lead to a long term drop in player quality as they start ignoring actual discussion to support whatever arbitrary thing they wanted back when.

QM's should always have prompts, even if their quest is slow.
A prompt doesn't have to be a huge action set piece or a conflicting moral dilemma.
A difficult decision can be something as small as having deciding who to sit with at lunch.

If we take yet another look at Mendacity, we can see some examples of prompts being used even during the most mundane activities.

For example, while looking around the attic the players are faced with this prompt:
>“Hey dad, shouldn't we be out working by now?”
They now have a decision to make; stay and search the attic or go out and work.
It's not a major or life and death choice, but it's something for the players to react to.

Another example is when the players were reading an old book. The update was nothing but a huge dump of text and exposition.
Even so, it ended on this prompt:
>Leaning back you think over the different tidbits of information you have found, do you bring shining over to help track down this lead or switch focus back to the coin? It is getting late in the day, Spring will likely be starting dinner soon.
The players are presented with different options. They have to decide and choose.
Once again, it's not something intense or dramatic, but it's still important in maintaining player interest and investment.

So, as you can see, even slow and uneventful moments in a CYOA can still have prompts.

Without prompts, players just suggest whatever idea they think will move the plot forward. They're not immersed into the role of the character.

There are styles of quests that don't care about the strong/weak prompt divide. Unique, for example, is a frame-by-frame quest. The QM rarely ever controls the MC directly, always opting for letting the players respond wherever the MC does anything at all, including opting to do nothing. This works because each QM post is short and almost immediately following the next one creating engagement with speed as opposed to strong choices.

If my players are missing the most obvious shit ever, basically doing circles and getting nowhere in the story, am I doing something wrong?

My players wake up next to a sleeping mare that is bound to the her side of the bed, underneath the covers. While she was struggling and pleading to be let out, they realized they were locked inside and basically teased her, gesturing her to try using the door herself. When they were met with more struggling beneath the covers, they decided to put their ear to the door to see if anything's going on outside of it.

I do feel bad. Hopefully I don't fuck up next week.

She clearly wasn't going anywhere, so there was no rush.
You should also consider if they were being intentionally ignorant.
Don't assume your players will act in a moral or serious manner at the start of a quest.

I had a nagging feeling about this, not sure why I disregarded it. I get concerned about the amount of detail I'm giving to my players a little easily.

When players seem confused, I worry about not painting big enough a picture when providing a prompt.

As soon as a QM shows his hand and tries to push me to do something, I am significantly less likely to do whatever it is he wants. Aryanne is currently trying to suck off a helicopter propeller partially because the QM is trying to get somewhere in spite of commands instead of because of them.

This is why I only try to set up vague scenarios instead of direct A to B stuff anymore. The only thing worse for your CYOA than trying to force your players along a specific path is actually having them do so.

Don't be mistaken. QMs can push sometimes. But as soon as there's push back from the players you're setting up a player vs QM scenario. Always remember, you have a massive amount of control over how the quest feels and how it feels is of the utmost importance.
