This general is dedicated to the discussion of "Them's Fightin' Herds", the 2D PC fighting game with animals in an universe designed by Lauren Faust. No Ponies = No Point

The dev team copped out and this has no reason to exist in a market full of much better professionally done fighting games.

The only thing that made it special and unique was the fact that it was a fan made PONY fighting game. That made it amazing. Now it's just generic fighter #87. It's literally nothing.

Not directly, but until we learn more about the characters and the setting, the only thing that really could be discussed is how similar (or dissimilar) the characters are to their original pony counterparts. It's the only reference we can draw upon.

A better example is relating MLP to Faust's Galaxy Girls. Franchise-wise, there is absolutely nothing in common with them, but it's pretty obvious MLP was Faust's vehicle to transfer the themes she made for GG.

Them's Fighting Herds will only have 7 characters at its release, but they'll likely develop a few more which will cost about $5 per character.

The original game, Fighting is Magic, had over 20 characters planned.

I am going to say that this is better without ponies, because right now this thing actually has a story; an interesting story. The Fighting Is Magic game lacked a good story and would have been more of a novelty than anything lasting.

The MLP;FIM universe doesn't mix very well with the Foenum universe anymore. If everything right now starts as crossovers with MLP it's like these characters don't have an identity beyond being substitutes for MLP characters and the Foenum universe will feel unarticulated. These characters are supposed to get their own identity, that's why Ms Faust is in the team.

I'm not going to deny that it once was pony related, but right now effort is put into making something new. At first it was just to replace the ponies, but that gave them a new path to go down, and that path does not involve MLP anymore.

Maybe the pandering to bronies will turn out to be(/have been?) a transitional phase. If it does, I would belive the pandering was not done because they wanted to con the fans, but it was done because it DID start out as pony-replacements, but then it grew into something new.

It's not a beta test. It's beta access. I mean I guess you are technically 'testing' the game, but we have 10% of our budget for QA already. And we'll likely need to spend more (one of the things the flow over will probably go into).

The Beta access is a reward for spending over $40, not a job. You don't have to report anything you find (although it would be appreciated) , you can simply play the unfinished game with other people. That's it! It's likely that people will find bugs or strange happenings at that scale that our QA will miss, simply due to the amount of people playing and different computer setups etc etc.

Goat char's moveset is based on a character we were going to make in Fighting is Magic, but because those never made it past the concept stage there was nothing really specific to tie it to a show character so her personality and story will not be based on any mlp character except maybe by chance.

Like most of you can tell, the generals will get less and less relevant until we can actually show or update stuff (like lore or more footage or a stream). But we are on /mlp/ and it doesn't look like that's changing any time soon. That's fine. We didn't ask to be here but it's nice we have somewhere at all. It's an alternative to the backer forums or the subreddit or even the discord room (which I haven't been to yet!) which all have different tones of interaction/levels of shitposting.

Our game has a history with mlp, and that's what it is, a history. It's a pretty simple connection.

We thought the MLP show was fun.
We started making a game that was somewhat ironic in that it was a 'fighting' game between the 'friendship' characters.
We didn't try to make the content super serious, but we took the task seriously.
We got C&D.
Creator of show saw that we 'got' the intent and tone and attitude of her vision for the show.
Joined us to make new game without being tied to an existing IP.

Fighting is Magic plot? That was the topic that pretty much resulted in constant arguing whenever it was brought up. Some wanted a deeper story some wanted no story some wanted a mix. We ended up with a very simple classic tourney plot with a setup and a separate payoff per character.

Unless it's gonna be a flat side show, and if it isn't too tall of an order, I think adding some depth one way or another could improve it.

The design is not too bad itself at this stage, the only thing I notice is the amount of banding going on, but those you can easily fix with additional colors.

Of all the trolls at least the humanfags did make a point. I will say that humans have no place in the story, I think it was a bit too rash to come out and say they don't exist and will never exist in the universe. I think humans were never needed in MLP, but that doesn't mean that every animal centric world has to deny them as well because I realize they do add something to having them.

Additionally you kinda got the contrast problem now in reverse, in that all colors are at the light end of the spectrum. You may also want to consider those yellows for the flowers(?), perhaps use a more orange-ish yellow or use a darker outline for them? Although, that decision largely depends on the type of background you're intending.

I think you could benefit from using a neutral gray background while pixeling, as that way the colors you pick won't seem too dark nor too light, but again, that depends on the target background.

The overall look, however, is quite detailed. I particularly like the "crown" above the door in the middle.

In that case, yeah, I think you should use either a different yellow or use darker outlines around the oats. Bright yellows like that simply drown into lighter backgrounds, and may be way too harsh against black.

For the blues, I would recommend adding a hint of purple, or not using a straight up darker-to-light ramp. Perhaps consider using hue shifting to make the colors pop out from another more?

Here's a quick example how I would go about doing the top of the door without adding a new shade of blue or purple to the mix. The preview window is 1x scaling, used a black background to make the changes more visible.

Essentially, you offset the pixels somewhat so that lines of pixels don't perfectly "hug" one another. This mostly means any pixel groups larger than 2, so any 45 degree diagonal lines hugging one another isn't necessarily bad, depends on the context.

I recommend grabbing Michafrar's Pixel-Logic, chapter three provides some excellent examples for the use of anti-aliasing (through pictures, mostly): http://nexgensprites.com/threads/pixel-logic.50/

The oats are far clearer now, too, tho I like to shade yellow with orange. Yellows tend to become very muddy unless you hue shift the the darker shades, which makes them a tad annoying to work with.

And don't worry, you're doing a nice job despite having not done pixel art in so long.

If I had to give a backstory to this AU. In a miracle we actually ended up with an amazing relationship with the ungulates and we didn't think Foenum was worth our time especially to risk being banished. The series wouldn't have humans in Foenum it would have Foenicians in our world.

To be fair we don't know if the main cast is going to suddenly become best friends at the end, so already it could be a deviation from the source material.

I wouldn't care honestly if a cartoon based on the series decided to take liberties as long as it was close enough to still feel like an adaptation. I don't want humans in this game because I think it takes away from the magical land that is Foenum and heck even the guy's plans were that Foenum was clearly its own place which was free of humans which operated by its own world, it is just in this AU there is a world outside of Foenum that is occasionally visited by the Foenicians. For a cartoon adaptation that is trying to be silly....ehh I would actually give the idea some merit for being a bit unique in that rather than trying to be a copy of the human world (like Equestria) instead it would allow Foenum to be far more unique and allow things like human-esque phrases, technology, places to be explored without needing to change Foenum to fit.

Maybe I am a sucker for talking animals that act like animals to interact with humans.

Anon working on the idea, humans wouldn't be in Foenum and for a variety of reasons would not be comfortable living there. Even if I got the go ahead to make a cartoon it wouldn't be greatly explored and for the most part would just be occasional episodes where they have some business being there or to explore locales that wouldn't make sense in Foenum, but can now still be explored with the characters. The human world is essentially a bonus world they get to partake in even if Foenum would still be the focus. I thought it was a compromise from making a copy of the human world like Equestria has become.
