Possible future villain? It's a lot bigger than the dragon eggs we've seen on the show previously, but it could be some kind of god-like super dragon inside.

That actually would make sense, explains why there's gemfields and similar across Equestria.

Quite possibly only baby dragons eat gemstones, needing nutrients, like baby birds are fed from the crop.

A dragon on its horde is just sitting in crap, where it's nice and warm.

I was thinking more that it was a natural formation, and the reason why the rock farm was started there. But I like your explanation better. And it also works for the rock farm. The ground is well fertilized there for rocks.
