In reality this is very rare in CYOAs. Most QMs aren't willing to kill off their characters, and most players aren't so retarded they leave the QM no choice.
Regular MC death has only really been used by Inept and, to a lesser extent, BathWaterHero.

I know her neck is in shadow but the shadow is lost against the backdrop of the building so it just looks like she has an extremely thin beanpole neck and an extremely oversized jaw. Maybe you could use the pink to highlight the edge of the neck thats covered in shadow?

Really, you should just run whatever you are most passionate about. Of the three people who replied to you, there's a good chance none of us will be present in your thread. Likewise, there could be a ton of players who join your thread but weren't here to comment on which premise they prefer.

If your quest is good then people will come. You should just go with whatever you think you can do best.

Having characters, locations and plot hooks planned in advance makes things easier later.

Just make sure you don't create assets that you can't replicate on the fly. Also, don't plan out a plot, or things will go bad when players break off the rails.

Been a while, Is the author of that Octavia CYOA still around? It was the one where we played as Octavia exploring this really interesting world from a portal from equestiria - sending back reports. There were giant bugs and conspiracies. also at least two parts were spent in a small shack near a field with a glowing flower. It was getting pretty intense when I last saw it.

11-54 is going to keep going until it's finished. I've got way too many things planned that people haven't seen yet.
Funny thing about 11-54 is that when I finally got back to it after finishing Entrapment, I had to dial back the difficulty because players stopped paying as much attention to the environments. Fortunately after this battle with a Bio-form 14 queen, I think I can get back up to the original difficulty.

I think Nips is gonna finish all of his quests eventually.
The only one's he's got are Shining Star, Northern Excursion, LOST, and Foal Quest, assuming that Pumpkin Quest is going to be a super short quest.
During the summer his schedule opens up and he QMs like 5/7 nights and goes really hard. So I have high hopes.

I'd assume he's in college, but I am operating under Murphy's Law and assuming he's going to spend his winter weeks doing other stuff.

I don't get the whole anti-Nips sentiment. People rage at him when he doesn't live up to his max output. He's pretty much the #1 QM, despite a few complaints, and we should probably appreciate ALL our QMs a bit more.

I talked with him in stream recently and asked him what he was going to run once Pumpkin Panic finished.
He said he's actually working on having a set schedule on what and when he's going to run.

I don't think many people are turned off by ColtQuest. It's very popular.

Also, it doesn't really have a story so far. It's just been a bunch of detached random encounters. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

It suffers from a common flaw of not allowing for much downtime outside of a designated 'downtime event', which barely counts.

Thats not the end of the world and I still happily follow it, but its a little thing that always bugs me when QMs throw you from one thing to the next with little room to let characters breathe.

It doesn't get talked about because there isn't a whole lot there to discuss outside of the morality of kiddy diddling or how to best play a sex abuse victim, and the thread handles all that.

Colt quest lewd is like popcorn, everyone loves popcorn but if you had to have a discussion about popcorn you'd have trouble filling the time and you'd probably talk about everything but the popcorn. you'd debate the seasoning, usage of salt, butter or no butter, etc. Primary example being Hope, whose lewd scene was 'walk to her tent, look in, she's shining her pearl, fug her'

Now using bathwater as the counter example, bathwater lewd is like debating the merits of your favourite chocolate bar. There's merit to discussing the quality of chocolate but there's also a bunch of other things inheriant to a chocolate bar to discuss, nuts vs nugats, caramel vs wafer, dark vs milk, etc. Primary example being entrapment lewd where we initiated it because we were trying to entertain a bloodthirsty crowd of savages who had captured us and forced us to fight and die for their amusement and we were doing it out of a desperate desire to want to avoid having to kill again. The preceding scene to the fight was literally us vomiting ourselves insensate as a result of having to kill.

so yeah, more stuff to talk about.
Still, there's nothing wrong with popcorn, everyone loves popcorn.

That's a pretty nice explanation for the definite distinction between "lewd quests" and "quests that have lewds" that nobody really talks about.

I actually followed CQ for a while despite having little interest in lewds, because the horrible implications surrounding Emerald's childhood and life were somewhat morbidly fascinating to me, but I eventually lost interest since it was the former of the two and very little came of it beyond being a narrative vehicle to make more lewds. Not to disparage it for that, since I'm sure plenty of people follow it knowing exactly what it is, it's just not really too engaging beyond that.

I already routinely talk shop with Panzermane since we've been friends for a while now. We've bounced ideas off another. He's helped me design characters, and I've done the same for him.

Really, though, most of the QM's he seem like interesting folk to chat with. I'm sure there's plenty I could learn from each of them, and plenty they could teach me.

The super short posts that you were making for a bit there were irritating, but it looks like you've started to fix that, and the double spacing you've started doing in your posts is a bit of an eye sore.
Other than that, I actually enjoy your writing style, the comedic undertones are used to further your character's personalities and it keeps the story fun.

I hope not. The cyoa I'm planning has a goal, an endpoint that the players are working towards rather than just wander around aimlessly and hope you get a good end. I've already come up with several possible endgames based on player actions. A sort of good end, bad end, and "what?" end.

This is what I'm doing, more or less.

There's a plot, and I have several endgame states ready, but I'm always ready in case players decide they want to go for something else.

Now, there's nothing stopping players from saying, "Fuck everything, I just want to be a hermit and live the rest of my life on top of a mountain," but I've not yet seen a whole CYOA's premise totally abandoned in a CYOA, once set, as long as there's visible progress being made.

As for anything else, just stay flexible. If players start to drift away from your tracks, a good QM will find a way to nudge them back on without them even realizing there are any rails in the first place.

The way I see it, the best QM is the one who will build a totally new track with an equally satisfying destination no matter where the players go. But that's because I'm somewhat talented at creative writing and I like a good challenge. Endgame states are sort of what the classic CYOA formula follows, so as long as you keep them to yourself none will be the wiser.

I dropped your quest at the chucky cheese place so I don't have anything to say about any changes or information after that point, but here are my complaints.

I didn't like how everything was double spaced. It's really just a cheap way to make the posts look more full than they actually are. I didn't like that a bunch of posts were only four lines long. Five or ten minutes between updates is worthless if there's nothing even there.

Several of your posts ended in the worst kinds of non-prompts. Asking if we slept well, how we felt after he did the stare thing at us. Were we supposed to have answers to those? Were we supposed to know? Other posts ended at lines of dialogue or non-action where there's nothing to respond to at all.

I think we were given a character personality, but I don't think that ever shone through anywhere. I don't feel anything when our character talks. He's described as painfully cocky, but there's no tone or flare to his words or actions. Hell, with the flirting and cuddling with Scruff on the couch, I forgot we were even a stallion. Our gender was mentioned a single time and our relationship with him is unclear. We've known him for years, he's our friend, he's got our back, the couch cuddles and face nuzzles were treated as regular things, but he blushes when we say we felt the same as always around him?

Lastly, I'm not sure what the quest is even about. Wasn't it advertised as a sort of Cutie Clash 2 or something? Based on the Owl Eyes avatarfagging and the combat test ran here a while ago, that's sorta what I expected. But instead, it was fucking nothing. There's something about a book? In any case, I have no idea what's going on. Nothing has happened in what I've read.

Again, I dropped the quest fairly early I think, but didn't like what I did see.

My only advice to the QM would be to establish the MCs goals and flesh out the setting before having any slice of life stuff happen. Take a look at M&M for an example.

I explained above that my writing structure for the quest hasn't been altered from my day-to-day writing structure. I don't expect every post I make to carry a wealth of information, but I also wasn't trying to make it seem that way with all the spacing. It is just a bad habit that I intended to rectify.

There's not much of an excuse for the crappy non-prompts. I guess I was too focused on giving freedom of response/reaction and ended up letting the story unnecessarily stagnate. We would be much further along by now if it weren't for that.

As for the MC, I have been thoroughly negligent of his supposed character. Aside from small, near meaningless quirks, he's been rather malleable.

If he's able to shift his writing style from movie/tv to story writing it shouldn't be much of an issue. Almost everything he was doing wrong centered around that. The initial character info dump would have been a shot of the three characters in a visual medium possibly with narration. Which works because it immediately gives identifiable information. It doesn't work in text because info dumps are not identifiable.

The couch scene was disjointed because the viewpoint jumped around without transferring. The transfer in a visual medium would have been a fade or pan which doesn't have a textual representation.

And of course we have the hard cut that just falls flat when written.

There were other little things that also pointed to that style of writing.

It's possible to incorporate elements of visual mediums into text, but a direct transfer is a guaranteed failure.

Innkeeper and Panzermane have apparently known each other for a while, and as far as I know, Nips doesn't really discuss quest ideas and such unless it's about a tumblr buddy's new quest. The only time I've seen him actually discuss his own quest with someone was that time he showed Foal Quest monster designs to someone to see if they stylistically fit.

I don't know any QMs that talk to other QMs for ideas and advice.

But maybe it's just a secret club that I'm not in ;_;

But I'm not understanding how the (you)'s even end up there. You get post numbers by clicking the post numbers. Doing it by copy pasting from replies to those posts is the only way you'd end up with (you)'s, and that's a weirdly long and inefficient way of doing it.
