former brony here. i stopped watching during the first hiatus. i realized liking it for me was about feeling like a little girl. obsessing over cartoon ponies made me feel cute, innocent, young, naive and girly. dont get me wrong i genuinely enjoyed i just figured out why I do.

That never was the case for me. Part of what lured me in from the start was that the main character in this very girly show for a young audience was pretty sarcastic, and she and her new friends had to fight monsters in the pastel colored fantasy land.

But if I'm being totally honest with myself, I'll admit I tuned in to see the show be a trainwreck, was pleasantly surprised when it was actually good, then totally surprised myself when I was still watching 16 episodes later. The fact that I could share that surprise with a pretty large number of men who found themselves in a similar position posting about it online ended up being part of the allure. Because I sure as fuck couldn't talk about this shit with anyone I knew in real life.
