What kind of leader do you think Nightmare Moon would've become if she had succeeded in overthrowing Celestia's position? Any better than the kooky megalomaniac she became after spending 1,000 years in solitary confinement, or worse?

Also, what kind of place would Equestria itself have become by the time the show's canon started off?

She would have been made to fight Discord, Chrysalis, and Sombra all on her own, likely failing, creating an even greater power vacuum in Equestria, and ultimately a better environment for Discord to thrive

Nightmare became substantially more powerful than Celestia after her transformation, AND was the only villain to date to actually resist a blast from The Elements of Harmony on almost equal grounds before ultimately getting beaten. She was ridiculously OP, even despite not having as much versatility as Discord.

And, considering Discord could get caught by the likes of Tirek (before he even got his hands on Alicorn Magic), I'd say Nightmare could give him a run for his money if she was really out for blood. And Chrysalis too, if she was even drawn to Equestria in the first place in that timeline, and would be able to steal as much love as she could from Shining Armor.

As for Sombra, it's harder to say. A lot of variables feel pretty up in the air as far as he's concerned.

The sun rises because a pretty princess wills it to do so. Stars can somehow liberate renegade ponies from the moon. Ponies have to make leaves fall, and weather change manually. Is it really so hard to believe an eternal night wouldn't be unfeasible to survive in the context of a world that works like that?
