lolno. Derek Bailey approached the instrument with a sense of purpose and intentional direction. When you hear him play a series of harmonics intertwined with chord clusters he knows exactly where those harmonics are located on the fretboard. But you're also kind of right in that Free Improv is more often than not an excuse to be lazy on your instrument. What what supposed to be "non-idiomatic" improvisation has become idiomatic when everyone is just playing senseless garbage.

Guitarists are especially guilty of this and as a result there haven't' been too many great free improv guitarists when compared to other instruments

well the lolno is arguable because the sounds that Bailey extracts from the guitar can be extracted by Haino as well, just not with the same idea as Derek. With Derek it was always about precision in the chaos. Haino does not have that. I do agree that he is nowhere near him in terms of technical abilities and probably has no technical proficiency at all.

However, Haino uses his guitar in many different ways. Just limiting his playing style to that particular video is very short-sighted. He crafts the sound rather than the melody or the structure. He is also more of a theatre fuckhead, so a lot of his stage performances are merely a way to exercise his Artaudian techniques.

This is completely different Haino guitar style that still might not be anywhere near as technically proficient but still manages to sound wonderful.

i like Green more but Halen brought some real neato techniques to the fore. Only problem was he shat them out at the worst possible times. The solo in Jump is one of the most misplaced confusing solos i've ever heard

can someone explain why jeff beck is considered a guitar god?

I've never heard anything he did that was super awesome

seems like he wrote worse/more nerdy shit than page or clapton and had worse chops but is often referred to as the best out of the yardbirds dudes

I actually heard him do some rockabilly stuff and he was pretty good...

but all that stuff in the 60s with rod stewart, his fusion stuff/blow by blow

none of it seems really good
